What Just Happened at General Synod?
There were some confusing media headlines about events at Synod over the past week, which seemed to (incorrectly) suggest that the Church of England had shelved plans for services for same sex couples and for greater inclusion more widely.
First, despite the support of a majority in Synod (but because of the threats of those who are against greater inclusion) the Bishops felt they needed to seek a different path of authorisation for a specific order of service for same sex couples, and this will involve a longer and more formal process than originally planned. However, the Prayers of Love and Faith remain commended for use and, as Vicar, I am able to use my pastoral discretion to use these prayers in services for same sex couples and I will continue to do so, as will St Mary’s, Barnes, and many other churches.
Second, the Synod brought the Living in Love and Faith programme to its conclusion as it had reached its natural end at the conclusion of this Synod’s term of office. However Synod voted strongly to move forward with authorising official services for same sex couples (and other inclusive reforms) when the new Synod (following elections) meets later this year.
Do feel free to get in touch with Fr Stephen if these events have caused distress or pain. St Michael’s is committed to being a church where the diversity of God’s people are celebrated, honoured and welcomed after the example and teaching of Jesus Christ.
